Edwin van der Sar, historic goalkeeper of Ajax Amsterdam and Manchester United, was placed in intensive care on Friday after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage, the Dutch club announced. “Edwin van der Sar had bleeding around the brain. He is hospitalized in the intensive care unit,” wrote the club, of which van der Sar, 52, recently resigned as general manager.

His former club Manchester United, whose goals he kept from 2005 to 2011, also sent a message of support via social media. “Sending you all our love and strength, Edwin,” the Red Devis wrote on Twitter.
Van der Sar left Ajax last May after “an incredibly difficult time” and more than a decade in the club’s management. His resignation came after the worst season in fourteen years for the Dutch club, which finished the championship in 3rd place.
