Former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) will receive the Bavarian Order of Merit on June 21. This was announced by a spokesman for the State Chancellery in Munich on Monday. The Munich Merkur/tz media group initially reported on the award. Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) wants to present the medal to the former head of government in the Munich Residence.
A spokesman for the Bavarian state government explained to the newspapers that Merkel was receiving the honor for her commitment at a time marked by international crises. He cited the financial crisis, the euro crisis and the corona pandemic as examples. “Likewise, as the first female Chancellor in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany, she was and is a role model for equal rights – she has shown many women an important path in politics and society.”
