Status: 06/11/2023 12:22 p.m

In the forest fire area near Jüterbog in Brandenburg, the situation has eased a little. Drone images still show glowing nests. Bundeswehr and federal police helicopters support the extinguishing work.

It continues to burn in the wooded areas near Jüterbog south of Berlin. However, the situation is said to have relaxed a little, said Silvio Kahle, a spokesman for the operations center. Accordingly, the rain that fell on Saturday helped fight the fire, especially in the northern area.

Footage from drones still shows embers. Since the fire brigade cannot get to the source of the fire from the ground due to the risk of explosion on the former military training area, they continue to rely on support from the air. The Bundeswehr has two helicopters in use for this purpose, the Federal Police one.

The extinguishing work is also concentrated on the area around the village of Altes Lager in the municipality of Niedergörsdorf in the Teltow-Fläming district.

“Major disaster” may be over

According to Kahle, it is currently being considered whether the “major damage situation” can be lifted in the course of the day. This enables emergency services from outside the district and the fire brigade to be requested. On Friday, the district of Teltow-Fläming took over the management of the operation with the announcement of the “major damage situation”.

According to the information, the entire affected area currently covers around 733 hectares. According to the operations management, there is no danger to surrounding towns.

risk of forest fires high due to drought

Emergency services continued to try to limit the fire on the former military training area on Saturday. Around 86,000 liters of extinguishing water were dropped on 48 approaches. Since the beginning of June, around 448,000 liters of water have been used on 249 approaches to provide on-site support.

There has been a fire in the area since May 31st. Strong winds had fueled the fires again and again. The danger of forest fires is currently high throughout Brandenburg. The forest fire protection officer sees a high risk for the coming week, because according to forecasts by the German weather service, it will remain dry.
