Many victims of the Hamas massacre are so severely disfigured that they can only be identified through DNA analysis. Forensic scientist Nurit Boublil takes care of these cases. Body bags are arriving at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Tel Aviv these days by the truckload.
Ms. Boublil, what happens to the dead whose bodies were recovered in the towns around the Gaza Strip where Hamas terrorists raged on October 7th?
The recovery of the dead has not yet been completely completed. In Israel we are prepared for suicide bombers, but also for other disasters such as fires. But we were not prepared for over 1,300 Israelis to be slaughtered in the middle of Israel, at a party or in their homes. We could never have imagined this. The bodies are first taken to the Shura military base, near the city of Ramle in the center of the country. There is a mortuary there and now also several refrigerated containers. The bodies are examined and identified there so that relatives can bury them. If the bodies cannot be identified, they come to us.
