World record: Never before has a country exported more in one month than China did last March. Germany, on the other hand, does not fare so well when it comes to exports.

According to the economic research institute IfW, China set an export record of 315 billion dollars (290 billion euros) in March. Never before has a country exported goods worth more than $300 billion within a month, said IfW researcher Vincent Stamer on Wednesday.

China is increasingly recovering from the low demand in winter, especially with regard to exports, and is thus supporting global trade in goods. According to Stamer, it is astonishing that imports did not increase to the same extent and that China has been generating a significant goods surplus since last year. “Weak domestic demand and a lower dependency on intermediate products from abroad could be the reasons”.

According to the Kiel researchers, world trade was slightly positive in June in a price and seasonally adjusted comparison to the same month last year. For Germany, however, there was a minus of 0.4 percent in exports and 1.3 percent in imports. World trade was primarily driven by China, with export growth of 3.5 percent. Imports increased by 3.7 percent.
