Foreign trade: German exports will fall by 1.4 percent in 2023

German exports fell by 1.4 percent in 2023 compared to the previous year. This emerges from the foreign trade data for the entire year presented by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in Wiesbaden. Imports to Germany fell by 9.7 percent.

In total, Germany exported goods worth more than 1.56 trillion euros in 2023. According to Destatis, the import volume included goods worth more than 1.35 trillion euros. Accordingly, the foreign trade balance ended 2023 with an export surplus of around 210 billion euros. Since imports fell significantly more than exports, the export surplus has more than doubled compared to 2022.

2023 ends with a weak December

Foreign trade figures for December in particular fell. According to the Federal Office, exports of goods fell by 4.6 percent compared to November – this was the largest decline in a year. Compared to December 2022, this is also a decrease of 4.6 percent.

According to the Munich Institute, the new calendar year also started badly for the export industry. Expectations for business in the coming months fell again in January.
