Southwest Germany has to be prepared for the potential for severe weather in the next few days, while the drought continues in another region. The cause is a special weather situation.

The German Weather Service (DWD) predicts strong thunderstorms and heavy rain in the next few days come to Germany. Heavy thunderstorms could occur as early as Tuesday, “especially in the south and in the center,” the DWD reported. The DWD also sees a risk of severe weather locally due to heavy rain. In the northeast, the drought and summer temperatures continue.

On Wednesday, the risk of thunderstorms with heavy rain is greatest in the southwest – “in isolated cases even into severe weather areas,” as the DWD reported on Tuesday in Offenbach. Heavy rain lasting several hours is possible locally on Thursday night. In some cases there could be “storm volumes” of over 35 liters per square meter. The risk of thunderstorms will be reduced.

On Thursday, the danger zone shifts to the west and south as well as to the center. Towards the evening there is a threat of showers and thunderstorms with a renewed risk of heavy rain. In some cases, rainfall amounts of over 25 liters per square meter are possible in a short period of time. Heavy rain lasting several hours cannot be ruled out locally.

A stable Omega

There is currently a so-called omega weather situation over Europe, explained DWD meteorologist Christian Herold on Tuesday. This is characterized by a strong high flanked by areas of low pressure. “The high-altitude current, normally running from west to east, is diverted around this high and thus takes on the shape of an omega, which gives this weather pattern its name,” said the meteorologist. “Such omega weather conditions are usually very stable, so there will be no significant changes for the time being.”
