Pre-sleep on New Year’s Eve? No problem: “You don’t miss too much when it comes to the weather,” says meteorologist Kernn from the DWD. New Year’s Day will also be rather uncomfortable.

Clouds, rain and sometimes stormy winds: the weather on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day will be… Forecast from the German Weather Service (DWD) is unpleasant. On Sunday, clouds and rain will spread from west to east during the day, with thunderstorms possible in the north and west.

“Sunday is a wonderful time to sleep in. You don’t miss too much in terms of weather,” said meteorologist Jacqueline Kernn from the weather forecast center in Offenbach.

New Year’s Eve will be windy and humid: “But right at the turn of the year around midnight it looks like a dry window of one to two hours. Before and after, it’s best to stay at home,” said the expert.

After all, there are no winter temperatures. “There is no frost on New Year’s night. You don’t need a scarf and gloves,” she said. According to the forecast, temperatures will drop to 2 to 7 degrees on Monday night.

Windy New Year’s Day

As the night progresses, new showers arrive from the west. The wind is picking up noticeably in the western half of Germany, said Kernn. In the mountain areas above 600 meters there are also stormy gusts. “That means: In the western half – from the North Sea to Lake Constance – you should be a little more careful with rockets and firing batteries. It’s windy there even at midnight.”

On New Year’s Day it will remain windy with lots of clouds “and rain here and there”, even in the east. “There are definitely dry parts, but you can also cure the hangover on the couch,” she said. “It’s not dry and nice for a long time. It’s uncomfortable quite well.”

On Tuesday, “a new burst of rain” will come from the southwest, which will be heavier and last longer in the southwest half of Germany. Continuous rain is possible. In addition, stormy winds are blowing in the southern half. “There is no drastic calming in the weather in sight. The recurring rainfall keeps the levels of streams and rivers high,” she said.
