Vienna (OTS) – It stands for fun and freedom, performance – but also little rebellion: fans all over the world are celebrating the 60th birthday of the Ford Mustang. The iconic sports car appeared in front of an audience for the first time on April 17, 1964 at the World’s Fair in New York. Sales began the same day and broke records with 418,000 orders in the first year. To this day, the so-called pony car enjoys high demand. It has currently led the global registration statistics for sports cars (1) for more than ten years. To mark the anniversary, Ford is announcing two new model variants for the European market. The Mustang California Special revisits the idea of a legendary special edition first presented in 1968 and reinterprets it in a modern way. The Mustang with the new GT styling package further emphasizes the character of the classic muscle car with fashionable design accents.

New for the European market: Mustang California Special and a new GT styling package based on the Mustang GT with 5.0-liter V8\nWorldwide campaign: “Ford Mustang Global Gallop” event is intended to ensure high popularity of the Mustang in North and North South America, Europe, South Africa, China and Australia document \nSoon to be ordered: New Mustang Mach-E Rally and the ultra-high-performance sports car Mustang GTD, the most powerful production version of the legendary “pony car” of all time. There is also more good news for Mustang fans : Just in time for the sports car legend’s birthday, Ford confirmed today that the ultimate high-performance GTD variant will also be coming to Europe. It is the road-legal implementation of the GT3 racing car, freed from the constraints of regulations, with which the Blue Oval is returning to the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year. From April 30th, Ford will also open the order books for the new Mustang Mach-E Rally. Many details of this 358 kW (487 hp) variant of the purely electric SUV model from the Mustang family were inspired by the manufacturer’s long rally tradition. Today’s “Mustang Day” also marks the start of a special campaign one: The so-called Ford Mustang Global Gallop. 60 Mustang ambassadors, journalists and internet authors are taking part in this worldwide “Mustang Gallop”. Later this year they will start traveling with the sports car icon through North and South America, Europe, South Africa, China and Australia to document the continued popularity of the cult model. For example, Andy To ([@Andyto] (https://www.instagram.com/andyto)), Lauren Stoney ([@lalafox92] (https://www.instagram.com/lalafox92)) and Uma Leoni ([@Leonis.studios] (https://www.instagram.com/leonis.studio/)).
Ford will announce further participants shortly.

“Very few car models today can look back on such a diverse and varied history and such a large number of global fans as the Ford Mustang – and even fewer models have been rolling off the assembly line for 60 years without interruption,” emphasizes Jon Williams, Managing Director of Ford Blue Europe. “Our anniversary celebrations as well as the new variants of this series are all about freedom and driving pleasure, those attributes that have been the cornerstone of the extraordinary success of the Mustang for six decades now. They will continue to serve as inspiration for new technologies in the future where the Mustang will continue to gallop into the future.”

New Mustang variants, same spirit

The new Mustang GT California Special follows in the footsteps of an edition model that, with its special design, perfectly suited the American West Coast lifestyle in 1968. Ford is offering the new edition as a convertible with the 5.0 liter V8 engine and with a 6-speed manual transmission or 10-speed automatic. It is available in eight body colors including Iconic Silver and Vapor Blue, but is unmistakably characterized by a front air intake in Rave Blue and black surrounds for the main headlights: they give the sports car an unmistakable appearance at first glance. There are also side stripes made up of Medium Light Rave Blue as well as high and matt gloss black. They have a very special “GT/CS” lettering. It remains almost invisible in low light, but stands out even more clearly in bright sunshine. The 19-inch light alloy wheels have polished surfaces with details in Rave Blue. Special “GT/CS” emblems for the radiator grille and “GT” logos in the same color for the door sills complete the harmonious appearance.

The interior of the Mustang California Special is also extremely lively. The Ebony Black leather seats receive Navy Pier upholstery. Two-tone decorative stitching in Raptor Blue and Metal Gray echoes the exclusive design theme of the body. They decorate the dashboard, door panels, steering wheel and center console.

Just like the Mustang GT California Special, a new GT styling package is now available to order with the 5.0-liter engine and the two transmission variants as a fastback and convertible. The new styling package focuses on a dark look – from the light alloy wheels painted in Ebony Black to a black roof and similarly colored exterior mirror caps to black pony emblems on the front and rear. The appearance of the Mustang sends a clear message: This model wants to do more than just play…

Super sports car Mustang GTD: Most powerful production version of the “pony car”

The technically advanced Mustang GTD will be the fastest road-legal derivative of the famous sports car family of all time. The strictly limited ultra-high-performance production version is based on Ford’s new GT3 racing car. It made its debut in the GTD class of the North American IMSA sports car championship at the 24 Hours of Daytona in January and will be on the 15th and 16th. June this year will also start at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Numerous technologies in the Mustang GTD go far beyond the capabilities of the racing car – such as the active chassis system and hydraulically adjustable aerodynamic elements in the front and rear areas.

Mustang Mach-E Rally: Strong on asphalt and gravel alike

With the new Mustang Mach-E Rally, Ford is literally breaking new ground: It is the first series model from the Mustang family that also feels comfortable on gravel and sand tracks as a tribute to the brand’s decades-long rally tradition. Its 358 kW (487 hp) dual electric motor has an even higher torque of 950 Newton meters, which is distributed across the four wheels. The specially tuned chassis offers around 20 millimeters more ground clearance than the Mach-E GT. In addition to twin decorative stripes and an independently designed front section, the generously sized rear spoiler and white-painted 19-inch wheels draw attention to the special talents of this version.

60 years of Ford Mustang – the legend lives

Since 1964, seven generations of the Ford Mustang have found more than ten million buyers. The iconic sports car has appeared in thousands of cinema and television films, music videos and computer games. To this day it is the car with the most likes on Facebook.

The Mustang has also left an unmistakable footprint in motorsport. In its first year of sales, it celebrated its first victory at the Tour de France Automobiles in France. Since then, there have been countless successes in races, rallies and acceleration competitions. And the story continues. Ford is currently offering the new Mustang as a Darkhorse Spec R version for circuit events as well as in thoroughbred racing versions (not street legal) as the Mustang GT4 and Mustang GT3.
