for the reception of refugees, Ile-de-France mayors are stepping up to the plate

They have appeared by the dozen since Afghanistan saw women and men flee the Taliban regime. In Ile-de-France, many mayors have said they want to welcome refugees, going ahead of the state’s requests to save time. This is the case of about thirty elected officials in the Yvelines, who affirm in a forum sent to 20 minutes that “Europe and France must welcome these women and men who are threatened in their country”.

The text, initiated by Navid Hussain-Zaidi, opposition municipal councilor in Épône, was signed in particular by the unlicensed mayors Didier Fischer (Coignières) and François Morton (Guyancourt) and the socialist Bertrand Houillon (Magny-les Hameaux). In the same department, the Left Front mayor Jean-Philippe Gautrais (Fontenay-sous-Bois), the Communists Michel Lebouc (Magnainville) and Éric Roulor (Limay) and the mayor LR Hervé Gicquel (Charenton-le-Pont) declared themselves in favor of such a reception.

” We can do it “

“We are ready here in Saint-Germain-en-Laye to welcome those who have accompanied the French armed forces and who must not be abandoned. It is our responsibility as French people ”, said on Twitter Arnaud Péricard. “We do not necessarily have large accommodation centers, on the other hand, we have a strong network of solidarity and associations”, explained to France 3 Bertrand Houillon.

“It is a way of saying to the State,” rather than getting bogged down with local elected officials who do not wish, we can do it, if things are framed “, specifies with 20 minutes Francois Morton. “I am convinced that the Guyancourtois follow me on this subject”, adds this mayor, who had already welcomed in 2017 nearly 80 migrants in a municipal hall, and who highlights “the experience” on this subject of his city. François Morton is ready, but has not yet received any formal request from the State. On the other hand, around fifty refugees already received at the Novotel hotel in Charenton-le-Pont.

Valérie Pécresse opposed to an “unconditional welcome”

The Communist Party was particularly mobilized to offer a territory to the refugees. A dozen elected Communists in Ile-de-France joined a forum calling on “France and Europe” to be “at the rendezvous of history” and say they are “ready to contribute to their republican integration”. There are three mayors of Hauts-de-Seine (Bagneux, Malakoff and Gennevilliers), but also the mayor of Grigny (Essonne), Philippe Rio, the mayor of Mitry-Mory in Seine et Marne (Charlotte Faride) and the mayor of Vitry-sur-Seine in Val-de-Marne (Pierre Bell Lloch).

The president of the region, Valérie Pécresse, said on RTL opposed to an “unconditional reception”, considering that it was necessary “to privilege the reception of the displaced persons in the area”. A demonstration will take place on Saturday, August 28 at 2 p.m., at the corner of Avenue de New-York and Cours Albert 1er, in Paris, on the initiative of feminist associations, to challenge the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
