Ningde (China) – That could fuel the mobility turnaround! The Chinese battery manufacturer CATL launched the ultra-fast battery “Shenxing Superfast Charging Battery” on Wednesday. According to the Chinese company, the era of fast charging of electric vehicles is beginning.
According to the manufacturer, “Shenxing” can do this: ten minutes of charging gives a range of 400 kilometers! With a full charge, a range of more than 700 kilometers should be possible.
For comparison: If you charge a Tesla Model S with a supercharger, according to Tesla you can cover around 400 kilometers in 30 minutes.
CATL claims to be able to reach 4C. To explain: 1C means that a battery will be charged from zero to 100 percent in one hour. At 4C in just 15 minutes.
At room temperature, the Shenxing can be charged to 80 percent in 10 minutes. At temperatures as low as -10 degrees, it takes 30 minutes, according to the manufacturer.
The super battery is based on an improved LFP cell. LFP stands for Lithium Iron Phosphate, which is inexpensive. The conductivity is also optimized, explains CATL.
CATL is the world market leader
China dominates the battery market. More than 60 percent of global demand was covered by Chinese manufacturers last year. Market leader CATL opened a factory in Erfurt (Thuringia) in 2022 and supplies BMW, among others.
Mass production by the end of 2023
dr CATL chief scientist Wu Kai wants to make “advanced technology accessible to everyone and enable everyone to reap the benefits of innovation.”
According to Gao Huan, CTO of CATL’s Chinese electric car division, mass production of the Shenxing is expected to start by the end of this year and Shenxing-equipped electric cars will be on the market in the first quarter of next year.
