Football World Cup Qatar 2022: Manuel Neuer’s bandage is checked here | Sports

You look very closely…

Before the kick-off of Germany’s opener in Group E in the WM in Qatar vs Japan (live at the ARD) was the big question: Which bandage does DFB captain Manuel Neuer wear on his left upper arm?

Initially, tweets circulated that the goalkeeper would wear the “One Love” bandage – although Fifa announced drastic penalties for this.

When the DFB-Elf then runs onto the field, the resolution follows: Neuer does not wear the “One Love” bandage, instead wearing a bandage approved by Fifa.

Fifa announced to the DFB on Monday that they would not tolerate Neuer playing with the “One Love” armband. The DFB was threatened with penalties – including point deductions.

The DFB then buckled. Nevertheless, the hope remained that the team would set an example for diversity.

This did not happen on the field through the bandage. But about the team photo – at least a little.

The DFB players faced the photographers with their hands in front of their mouths. Message: We are forbidden from freedom of expression.

It was clear again before the kick-off against Japan that it would obviously have been punished if Neuer had worn the “One Love” armband – or even a rainbow armband.

Assistant referee Zachari Zeegelaar checks Neuer’s bandage with a clear gesture before kick-off, even touching the piece of cloth as the keeper prepares for the match in his box.

If Neuer had worn an unauthorized bandage, there would have been yellow at first. Depending on the course, further penalties would have been possible.

A lot of fuss about a small piece of textile – and a missed big message.
