DFB President Bernd Neuendorf sees a need to catch up on social issues in the World Cup host country Qatar.

Many changes in the law in the desert emirate “are only insufficiently implemented,” said Neuendorf the “kicker” (Monday). He also sees “clear differences” in “women’s rights, freedom of the press or the LGBTIQ+ issue”.

Neuendorf, who supports calls for the establishment of a support project for the surviving dependents of World Cup workers who died in an accident, is traveling to Qatar together with Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) before the tournament in November and December: “We can and must position ourselves as the DFB, but the political Local support is immensely important. That’s why I’m glad that Nancy Faeser suggested traveling to Qatar together.”

The DFB President is skeptical about the statement by World Association boss Gianni Infantino that the World Cup in Qatar will be the greatest tournament of all time: “But what we can say with certainty today is that it is one of the most controversial World Cups to date have taken place.”
