It is certainly a balancing act that the German Football League (DFL) is carrying out when awarding the Bundesliga television rights from 2025. DFL managing director Steffen Merkel doesn’t want to upset his existing long-term partners – and yet he has to find new interested parties who offer more and possibly drive up the price. The situation is particularly complicated on free-to-air television early on Saturday evenings. So far it has been transmitting ARD sports show on Saturday on free TV from 6.30 p.m. the summaries of the first and second division games – will it stay that way?
