Football on television: ARD and ZDF buy rights for DFB-Pokal – media

Football fans can look forward to more free TV broadcasts from the DFB Cup. According to information from the German Press Agency, ARD and ZDF have secured two packages of rights from the German Football Association (DFB). These enable the two public broadcasters to broadcast 15 games live per season from 2022 onwards.

The joint rights agency SportA took part in the DFB auction for the first and second, in which three different live packages were on offer last week. In doing so, she acquired packages A and B. In addition to the live games, these also include the associated rights for high-profile programs and clip exploitation on the Internet. The pay TV broadcaster Sky has secured package C with 63 games.

In 2021/22, ARD will show nine games, Sport1 four games

The results of the media rights tender are not yet official. The contracts with the broadcasters involved still have to be submitted to the DFB Presidium. The DFB and the broadcasters did not want to comment. Thanks to the agreement between the DFB and SportA, the number of games on free TV increased to 15.

In the DFB Cup season 2021/22, which begins in August, the old rule with 13 games on free-to-air television will apply for the last time. The ARD shows nine games, the special interest broadcaster Sport1 four. SportA secured the rights for ARD and ZDF in a tendering process, which was carried out under the direction of the new managing director Holger Blask, in which free and pay TV providers bid against each other. This could also have led to a reduction in free-to-air television to four games. But now there is a more fan-friendly version.
