Leverkusen can win three titles this season. Winger Frimpong already knows this feeling. The 23-year-old talks about his coach’s decision to stay at Bayer.

Bayer Leverkusen winger Jeremie Frimpong has highlighted the importance of coach Xabi Alonso for the club. “He has Leverkusen changed. All the players feel that,” said the 23-year-old about the Basque coach.

Alonso can win three titles with the Rhinelanders this season. Today Bayer 04 hosts English club West Ham United in the quarter-final first leg of the Europa League. At the weekend, Leverkusen can also complete the first German football championship in the club’s history. Alonso’s team also reached the final of the DFB Cup.

The coach, who is sought after across Europe, announced at the end of March that he would stay at Bayer 04 for at least another year. “I personally was very happy,” Frimpong said of the decision. The Dutchman, who still has a contract in Leverkusen until 2028, did not want to comment on his own future. “At the moment I’m in Leverkusen. It’s an exciting season. My whole focus is on that. I’m not worried about whether I stay or things like that,” he said.

Frimpong already knows the feeling of winning three titles in one season. In 2020 he won the Scottish Championship, Scottish Cup and League Cup with Celtic Glasgow. “That was a great feeling,” he said. “I play football because I like winning trophies – as many trophies as possible.”
