The traffic light factions have agreed on how to proceed with the planned state animal husbandry logo for meat in the supermarket. SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch spoke of a “breakthrough for more transparency, fair competition and more animal welfare”. According to the SPD, the draft should come before the Agriculture Committee of the Bundestag on April 19. Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens) welcomed the agreement. The new label is a decisive step forward. The cabinet had launched Özdemir’s legislative plans in autumn, which provide for mandatory labeling for domestic products. It is to be divided into five husbandry categories: from the legal minimum standard to organic. It is planned that the logo will be introduced for fresh pork this year as a first step. Meat from abroad should be able to be labeled on a voluntary basis. The large retail chains already have a uniform label for significantly more meat products. The new logo is now based on these existing markings, it said. An amendment was drawn up for further parliamentary deliberations, which also deals with the requirements for the respective categories. Among other things, the second-highest level of husbandry should be renamed from “outdoor/outdoor” to “outdoor/pasture”.
