After a long break, the Canadian singer returns to the stage. A big performance at the Gorge Amphitheater in Grant County is planned for next summer.
The legendary Canadian singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell (78) wants to return to the big stage with a concert next summer. On June 10, 2023, she will headline at the Gorge Amphitheater in Washington state, according to a statement published on Thursday (local time) on her website.
The US country rock singer Brandi Carlile, who is supposed to give her own concert the day before, will be there. “Nobody has been able to buy a ticket to a Joni Mitchell concert for 20 years, so this is huge,” Carlile said on Thursday’s US show “The Daily Show” with Trevor Noah. Mitchell is very excited because the venue is close to the Canadian border.
Back in July, Carlile and Mitchell performed together at the Newport Folk Festival in the US state of Rhode Island. “We thought it was a jam. We didn’t know she was going to sing all the leads on those songs. She just started singing,” Carlile said. She and her band would not have known what to do. “So we just sang with her.” After the performance, Mitchell told her she wanted to do another show. They then settled on Carlile’s annual summer concert series at the Gorge Amphitheater.
Mitchell was one of the most influential singer-songwriters of the 1970s and is still considered by many experts and fellow musicians to be the most important folk pioneer. Among other things, she wrote the song “Woodstock” for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, a hymn to the biggest festival of the hippie movement. Mitchell won multiple Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She released her last studio album “Shine” in 2007. After a life-threatening artery dilation in the brain in 2015, she was temporarily unable to speak or walk.
