Flugwerft Oberschleißheim – For the time being no commemorative plaque for Nazi victims – Munich district

A prisoner of war camp was probably located at the historic Schleissheim airfield during the Second World War and there was a branch of the Dachau concentration camp there that cleared the airfield from bombs. The Oberschleißheim Greens have therefore suggested placing a commemorative plaque to commemorate these institutions and their victims. However, the local council could not do anything with the concrete initiative; the project was returned for follow-up work.

The Greens are calling for a commemorative plaque on the Deutsches Museum’s airfield, “reminiscent of the existence of a prison camp as a branch of the Dachau concentration camp during the Second World War.” This is problematic because the prison camp was definitely not a branch of a concentration camp, so they are two different facilities. Mayor Markus Böck (CSU) reported that he had put local researcher Otto Bürger and community archivist Falk Bachter on the topic – and both reported nothing.

Bürger does remember prisoners of war there from his time as a little boy, but there are “no reliable documents”. This raises the pragmatic question of “what do we want to write on the commemorative plaque if there is no reliable information”. With the statement of the missing traces, Böck referred to the complete application; Of course, this could only mean the prison camp, because local councilors found reports and sources on the branch of the concentration camp by googling during the debate.

Gaby Hohenberger (Greens) announced that more in-depth research would be carried out, “that’s important.” The Greens would submit the application again “if reliable sources are provided”. The mayor agreed: “Let’s do some research.”
