Florian Hahn accuses Berlin of a lack of funding for geothermal energy – Munich district

Against the background of the current energy crisis, the two CSU members of the Bundestag, Florian Hahn and Andreas Lenz, denounced the lack of funding for geothermal energy in an open letter to Federal Minister Robert Habeck (Greens). The federal government is doing too little to expand geothermal energy, although this could make a major contribution to solving the challenges of heat supply in particular and the best experiences in this regard exist in the district of Munich and the region, both criticize. It is surprising that a green-led ministry of all people only sees a potential of 10 terawatt hours (TWh) for geothermal energy by 2030, although the Fraunhofer Institute predicts a far greater heat potential from deep geothermal energy in Germany at well over 300 TWh per year. “We need ambitious expansion targets immediately,” says a press release by the two politicians. The geothermal operators are capable of action, but need fair competition with fossil heat. Habeck must also do everything to ensure that the long-awaited federal funding for efficient heating networks can come into force as quickly as possible. “Further delays would simply not be understandable given the situation.”
