The snowmelt is particularly severe in parts of Russia this year. There are major floods. People complain about the authorities’ slow action.

The flood situation in Russia in the south of the Ural Mountains continues to deteriorate. In the city of Orenburg, the Ural River was 9.78 meters high on Wednesday morning – about half a meter above the critical mark, as the city administration announced. Several parts of the city were under water. According to the state news agency Tass, experts expected the water to rise by another 30 to 70 centimeters.

According to an overview by the authorities on Wednesday, 12,800 houses and 14,900 garden plots were under water in the entire Orenburg administrative region on the border with Kazakhstan. More than 7,000 people had to leave their homes. The masses of water meant that the substations in several villages had to be switched off and there was no electricity. Courts stopped working and museums moved their treasures to safety. There is resentment among the population that the authorities are slow to help.

In addition to the Urals, other rivers in the region about 1,200 kilometers southeast of Moscow also swelled significantly. The flood was triggered by heavy melting of snow and ice in the Ural Mountains, rainfall and dam failures near the city of Orsk. She was hit hardest by the flooding. On Wednesday there was a slight decrease in the water level there for the first time.

Flooding was also reported in neighboring areas of Kazakhstan. According to the Emergency Management Ministry in the capital Astana, 96,000 people have been temporarily brought to safety so far.
