Floods and high waters: Météo France places 12 departments on orange vigilance Tuesday and Wednesday

See my news

When will the end of rain ? Since mid-October, France has been crossed by a ballet of almost continuous rainy spells. And it’s not finished.

Several depressions are still announced this week, before a lull (and colder weather) which is emerging from the weekend of Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 November 2023.

For this Tuesday, November 14, 2023, Météo France is (again) warning of the risks of raw and D’floods. In its 4 p.m. bulletin, twelve departments are now placed on orange vigilance: Ain (floods), the Charente Maritime (floods), the Doubs (floods), theIsère (floods), the Jura (floods), the North (floods), the Pas-de-Calais (floods), the Rhone (floods), the Savoy (floods, rain-flood), the Haute-Savoie (floods, rain-flood), the Vendee (floods) and the Vosges (floods).

Note the end of the rain-flood alert in Pas-de-Calais, which remains on orange flood alert.

Over the last 12 hours, we recorded 20 to 40 mm in the north of the Pas-de-Calais department, and a peak of 52.3 mm at the Bainghen station, after the passage of the heaviest showers.

For Wednesday, November 15, these twelve departments are also kept on orange alert and 35 other departments are also on yellow alert on Wednesday, either for floods, rain-flooding, wind, or even avalanches.

Still windy also in the west of France

Yet another rainy area will extend this Tuesday from the Pays de la Loire to Aquitaine, and as far as the Grand-Est and the Alps, the weather organization predicted this morning. Precipitation should be more sustained on the eastern flank, particularly in Savoie and Haute-Savoie.

“The disruption of the day brings significant accumulations of rain in places, which cause the waterways to react,” Météo France said this afternoon. Since 7 a.m., 52 mm has fallen in Bainghen (Pas-de-Calais), including 25 mm in 1 hour, 35 mm in Novel (Haute-Savoie). »

Never so much rain in 26 days

Between October 18 and November 12, 2023 (26 days), France recorded an average cumulative rainfall of 215.4 millimeters.
This is the first time that France has recorded such an accumulation over 26 consecutive days in all seasons. We have to go back to 1993 to observe a cumulative amount of 196.9 mm between September 21 and October 16 (26 days).
The explanation comes from a “rail of depressions” which has dominated the near Atlantic for a month: the jet stream, a high-altitude atmospheric current still present in the northern hemisphere and blowing from west to east, is directed in France. It acts as a highway for disturbances that can move freely, meteorologists explain. This is why France is under the influence this fall of numerous water-laden disturbances which bring this rain.

Further north, the sky will alternate between cloudy periods and clearings, but “as the afternoon progresses, it will bring frequent showers along the Channel coast”, Météo France anticipated this morning, bringing (again) good weather. accumulations in the west of Hauts-de-France.

Also on the menu (again): wind on the coasts of Brittany and the English Channel with gusts of 60/70 km/h, and up to 80 to 90 km/h at midday. Only the Mediterranean region maintained calm conditions all day long this Tuesday with sunshine.

Rain and mild weather, particularly in Savoie and Haute-Savoie

At the level of temperatures, they are rather soft. The maximums were forecast this morning between 13 and 17 degrees in the northern half but up to more than 25°C in the south near the coasts of Roussillon, Var and Corsica.

This afternoon, Météo France specifies that this serious episode of rain is accentuated by “a significant period of mild weather”, particularly in Savoie and Haute-Savoie. Added to the “significant accumulations of precipitation”, with this mild spell, is the “melting of the snow cover below 2200m”, which “could bring the equivalent of an additional 20 to 30 mm”.

In this context, “as the soils are saturated with water, these accumulations could cause local overflows and mudslides”, warns Météo France.
