Flooded streets, sky streaked with lightning… the impressive images of thunderstorms in Marseille

After the first storms in the night and in the morning of Wednesday, Marseille has its feet in the water again and its nose under the lightning. Several streets near low points are flooded.

After a first storm this Wednesday morning, torrential rains fell on Marseille in the evening. The Bouches-du-Rhône department is placed on orange vigilance for thunderstorms and rain-flooding until midnight.

The stormy disturbance began at 9:40 p.m., “for the second time today, which is quite exceptional at this time of year not conducive to this type of weather event”, specifies The Weather Channel.

The pictures are impressive. After Paris and Lyon, it is the turn of the capital of the South to find itself under water. Under violent storms and strong winds, the streets of Marseille turn into rivers. At 10:30 p.m., more than 30 millimeters of rain had poured into the Marseille city.

This is the second deluge for the Bouches-du-Rhône prefecture. Many runoffs are recorded in the city, and floods are reported around the port, according to La Chaine Météo.

In the sky, the spectacle is almost breathtaking. Between the clouds, lightning lit up the night.

In Cassis, south of Marseille, floods are underway this Wednesday evening. In the two municipalities, “the cumulative rainfall for this Wednesday stands at 70 mm, or a third of the annual rainfall, and as much as what it rained between February 15 and August 16”, indicates The Weather Channel.

If the images of the storm are spectacular, there is “no particular or notable intervention” indicated the firefighters to AFP.

On this episode, we can locally reach accumulations of 100 to 150 mm, forecasts Météo-France in its last bulletin.
