Flooded metro stations, submerged cars… The equivalent of a month of rain fell in less than two hours

Hail, waterspouts pouring down from the sky. The city of Lyon and part of its agglomeration found themselves Saturday evening under the deluge. The storm broke around 7:30 p.m. An “exceptional” and “very localized” storm according to the Lyon Weather website, indicating that 83 mm of rain fell “in less than an hour and a half”. That is the equivalent of one month of precipitation.

Some metro stations were flooded, and part of line D was interrupted in the evening, as evidenced by several videos posted on social networks. Cars were also submerged and part of the A 450 motorway was cut off from traffic.

This Sunday morning, several schools woke up with their feet in the waterin particular the ENS (higher normal school).

Firefighters have identified more than 120 interventions in the Rhône department placed in yellow vigilance. More thunderstorms are expected Sunday afternoon, forecasters said.
