The flood situation in Bavaria is gradually easing. As the Flood Intelligence Service (HND) announced on Thursday, the number of water levels at which reporting levels have been exceeded is decreasing. However, the flooding on the Danube is only subsiding slowly: the water levels in Kelheim, Hofkirchen, Vilshofen and Passau could remain at reporting level 3 of 4 until the weekend, said a spokesman for the HND. Accordingly, individual developed properties or cellars can be flooded and streets can be closed. As a precautionary measure, mobile flood protection was set up at Weltenburg Monastery near Kelheim.
The Landshut Water Management Office issued a warning about flooding in built-up areas for the Kelheim district, which is valid until Saturday evening. However, a spokesman for the fire department assessed the situation as “very relaxed”. The water level is 5.56 meters, the protective wall is only necessary from a height of 5.85 meters. Flooding is not expected in the next few days either. According to the Landshut Water Management Office, the Danube level near Kelheim is only expected to rise slightly. From Thursday to Friday the floodwaters are expected to reach their peak and then slowly fall.
In Swabia between Neu-Ulm and Donauwörth, the water levels of the Danube were already falling, according to HND. Even on the northern tributaries of the Danube, only the water levels of the Harburg/Wörnitz and the Warnbach/Schwarzach had reporting level 2. Agricultural and forestry areas could be flooded or there could be slight traffic disruptions on main roads and local roads. According to the HND, the levels of the remaining northern and southern tributaries were at most reporting level 1.
The German Weather Service (DWD) announced rain again in the Free State for Thursday and Friday. According to the HND spokesman, the rainfall is no longer causing water levels to rise. According to the DWD, the snowfall limit drops to 700 meters in the north on Thursday evening, while in the south it snows above 1000 meters. On Friday the snowfall limit is around 800 meters.
