In the dispute over Europe’s future fleet limits, Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke has admitted defeat. “In fact, I would have wished for even higher CO₂ limits before and for 2030,” said Lemke. Such limit values have proven to be “effective means for more climate protection in traffic”. However, the Green Minister was not able to push through with her proposal to tighten the European limit value again. Instead, Germany now wants to support the EU Commission’s proposal in the negotiations. According to their “Fit for 55” plan, new cars after 2030 should emit 55 percent less CO₂ than in 2021. Lemke had advocated raising the target to 75 percent. Environmental organizations had also called for a more ambitious goal. Within the government, Chancellor Olaf Scholz had backed Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP), who did not want to go beyond the EU proposal.
