Five dolphins stranded on a beach rescued by police

Monday afternoon, the Calvados gendarmes were mobilized for an “unusual” intervention, according to a Facebook postspotted by BFM TV. The soldiers saved the lives of five dolphins, stranded on one of the department’s beaches. In a story published on social networks, the soldiers recounted this rescue in which they had participated.

Thus, at the start of the week, the Isigny brigades and the Ouistreham nautical brigade were alerted by oyster farmers that six dolphins had been “caught by the tide” and were “stranded on the foreshore”, 600 m from the sea, on the beach of Géfosse-Fontenay.

” Not a minute to lose “

When emergency services arrived on site, one of the six mammals had already died. “There was not a minute to lose and, with the help of an oyster farmer, the gendarmes were able to load the dolphins onto the trailer of a tractor, in order to be able to return them to the sea as quickly as possible,” details a post from the military on social networks. The marine animals then left, showing “in their own way, their gratitude to their rescuers”, assures the account of the Calvados gendarmerie.

On the occasion of this “unusual intervention”, the military reminds that in the event of discovery of a stranded mammal, it is necessary to immediately contact the authorities (gendarmerie, firefighters or the Pelagis observatory, responsible for coordinating the national stranding network) and above all do not handle it or try to put it back in the water. The gendarmes also warn: “Do not breathe the air spit out through the vents due to the risk of bacteriological contamination. »
