The felt-tip pen squeaks across the book’s paper. The author, a few years ago Germany’s best-paid manager, ex-head of the global corporation SAP, writes and writes. Not just his name, a whole dedication. What he’s doing here, after an interview in which he’s praised every question, is clearly meant to be further proof of what he just said. When asked how best to motivate employees, Bill McDermott replies without the slightest hesitation: “With trust and love,” he says, “people don’t care how much you know as long as they don’t matter to you.”
