From the carriage ride to the coronation to the concert: the palace has commemorated King Charles’ first anniversary on the throne with a video.

A year ago are Charles III (75) and his wife Camilla were ceremoniously crowned in London’s Westminster Abbey. The palace commemorated this with a video in the morning and asked people about their fondest memories of this special day.

On the palace’s Instagram page It says: “In addition to the service itself, the coronation weekend included a carriage procession through central London, a flypast, a royal salute by 4,000 soldiers in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, a coronation concert at Windsor Castle and a British Volunteer Initiative.”

Video presents excerpts from the coronation weekend

A video accompanied by music shows some scenes of the events mentioned. Among other things, you can see how Camilla and Charles drove to the church in the carriage, how the crown was placed on Charles’s head and how the royal couple appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. The speech by Charles’ son Prince William (41) during the coronation concert is also shown again in excerpts. His wife Kate (42), who is suffering from cancer, only appears briefly when shaking hands. The post ends with the question: “What is your favorite memory from the weekend?”

Gun salute for the king

How Daily Mail reported, royal experts assume that the king will celebrate his special day without much fuss – since his accession to the throne is closely linked to the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022). However, gun salutes are said to be heard across London to celebrate the first day of the coronation. 41 salvos are to be fired from Green Park at midday by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, 62 salutes an hour later from Tower Wharf and a further 21 for the City of London. There will also be gun salutes at Cardiff Castle, Edinburgh Castle, Hillsborough Castle and York’s Museum Gardens.

There was also a celebratory moment at the weekend to commemorate the ceremony a year ago: the royal couple received the so-called “Coronation Roll”, the handwritten official protocol of the coronation. In addition to the extensive paper version, the two also received a digital document of the coronation certificate. This is visible to everyone online.

First coronation year overshadowed by health problems

After his mother died in September 2022, Charles immediately became king. The official coronation took place on May 6, 2023. Dignitaries from all over the world traveled to the traditional ceremony. Eight months later, the palace’s announcement sparked widespread concern that the king would have to undergo prostate surgery. A little later, in early February, it was announced that cancer had been discovered during the operation.

While the monarch appears to be coping well with his treatment and has now returned to appointments, there are still concerns about his daughter-in-law. Kate was also diagnosed with cancer after abdominal surgery, as she announced in an Instagram video at the end of March. She will therefore not be making any appointments until further notice.
