The tension continues. Firework mortars fired on Monday morning at the Joliot-Curie high school in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine) where scuffles between young people and police had taken place last week, a police source told AFP. AFP, confirming information from journalist Clément Lanot.
An arrest took place on Monday morning following incidents that slightly injured a police officer and degraded a police vehicle, according to the source. Firework mortar fire also targeted the Claude-Chappe high school in Nanterre on Monday, the same source said.
Classes “are insured”
The video of journalist Clément Lanot posted on Twitter shows a dozen hooded people, on the sidewalk in front of the Joliot-Curie high school, firing fireworks towards the school.
“Following some tensions in the early morning, the students entered the school and the lessons were assured. Members of the academic prevention and security system (CAAEE) as well as regional pedagogical inspectors are present to support the management and the teachers, ”the Versailles academy told AFP.
“I had to confine my students”
The situation had become calm again around 10 a.m., noted an AFP journalist, with nine mobile gendarme vehicles securing the area and mediators from the City of Nanterre being present. “I haven’t been able to teach my students for a week,” a SVT teacher told AFP when she left high school. Joliot-Curie experienced intense tensions last week. The establishment was first blocked smoothly, last Monday, by students. Clashes broke out the next day, leading to the placement in custody of 14 young people. The students mainly protested against the end of the homework assistance system, against the rules of procedure and the framework for applying the principle of secularism, but also in support of a teacher and trade unionist transferred, Kai Terada.
Thursday morning, new scuffles involving around fifty young people with concealed faces according to the prefecture, had led the rectorate to close the establishment of 1,700 students.
Hearing for the transferred teacher
The climate at Lycée Joliot-Curie has been troubled since the transfer at the end of September of Kai Terada, a mathematics teacher who is also co-secretary of SUD-Education 92. The transfer order received by Kai Terada evokes an activity “outside the social dialogue bodies of the establishment or normal exercise of a trade union activity”, according to several teacher unions who accuse the academy of “trade union discrimination” and demand the “lifting of sanctions”.
A hearing should take place Monday at 2 p.m. at the administrative court of Versailles (Yvelines), the teacher having lodged an appeal against his “forced” transfer.
