Fireworks and video mapping by Betty Mü at the Stadtsparkasse München – Munich

Betty Mü has proven many times that she can use her video art to decorate walls, even entire buildings, in an interesting and entertaining way. And is therefore also internationally known. The Munich artist started with some small formats in rooms. Their art has long been seen on huge building facades. “In my video mappings, I project videos onto three-dimensional objects or buildings. I adjust the projection so that it harmonizes perfectly with the architecture of the facade – and includes windows or bay windows, for example,” explains the artist, who did it in the late 1990s moved from Munich to New York for work, where she had her first experiences with video art and live visuals.

Every video mapping is literally tailor-made, says Betty Mü. First, the building is photographed in detail. From this she creates the so-called UV map. On this basis, she then designs it on the computer Tailor-made videos and animations that could have different topics, the individual sequences of which are constantly changing, flowing in and out and forming new shapes. During the pandemic in December 2020, many people were able to experience how magnificently her works fit on the respective facades and how they can bring light into the darkness – not only of the night, but also of the soul – in the art area, where she lit up several museums .

Now, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Stadtsparkasse, Betty Mü will spectacularly stage its headquarters in the valley on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. First there will be an environmentally friendly ten-minute digital fireworks display on the facade on New Year’s Eve at the stroke of twelve. Afterwards, their video mapping “Sparks” (in German “Funken”) runs in an endless loop until 3 a.m. It will be repeated on January 1st and 2nd, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. On January 1st, the artist will be there herself from 5 p.m. So if you want to learn more about the art of video mapping, this is the best opportunity to do so.
