Fired from Spain, Jorge Vilda named head of Morocco women’s team in place of Pedros

The former coach of the Spanish women’s team, Jorge Vilda, sacked after the Rubiales affair, was named Thursday head of the Moroccan women’s team, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) announced on Thursday. He succeeds the Frenchman Reynald Pedros, who this summer led the Lionesses of Morocco to the round of 16 during the first World Cup in their history.

Close to the former president of the Spanish Federation Luis Rubiales, author of a forced kiss on the attacker Jenni Hermoso after the coronation of La Roja during the World Cup, Jorge Vilda was dismissed from his functions at the beginning of September and replaced by his deputy Montse Tomé. In 2022, Vilda was the subject of a revolt by fifteen players, who denounced her methods.

Dropped by the Spanish players

After the World Cup victory and the forced kiss scandal, Jorge Vilda, 42, was dropped by all of his players, who announced that they would not play again under his leadership, in reaction to the refusal to resign of Rubiales. The latter ended up resigning on September 10. After the Spaniards’ first world title, Rubiales surprised Jennifer Hermoso on the lips. His gesture provoked international indignation and his temporary suspension by Fifa.

The former president of the federation was charged in this case with “sexual assault” but also with “coercion” due to accusations of pressure brought by Hermoso against the former boss of Spanish football and his entourage. Also charged, Jorge Vilda denied in court this Tuesday having pressured Jenni Hermoso to minimize the forced kiss of Luis Rubiales.
