Fire in the Pyrénées-Orientales, Macron’s speech and fighting in Sudan

Did you miss the news this early morning? We’ve put together a recap to help you see things more clearly.

While the calendar has so far only reached the April page, firefighters are already dealing with a fire fueled by the lack of rainfall and dry soil. The one in progress since Sunday morning in the Pyrénées-Orientales is the most important since the beginning of the year. About 930 hectares of vegetation have indeed been devastated.

The fire “crossed the border with Spain”, underlined the prefecture in a press release issued in the evening, specifying that it “is not yet fixed but the situation is stabilized from the point of view of the protection of populations and property”. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin is expected on site this Monday from 8:30 a.m.

Emmanuel Macron will try this Monday to close the wound of the social movement around pensions in order to move on to another sequence. The Head of State will therefore speak at 8 p.m., in a speech which will aim to seek “appeasement”, according to Olivier Véran.

But, problem for the executive, the unions are already giving new appointments to continue the mobilization and calls to demonstrate during the president’s speech have been launched. Interviewed by our journalist Xavier Regnier, political scientist Bruno Cautrès deciphers the issues of this upcoming speech.

The guns continue to speak in Sudan. Since Saturday, fighting between the army and paramilitaries for control of power has killed at least 97 civilians, the Union of Doctors reported in its latest report on Monday morning.

During the putsch that ended the democratic transition in October 2021, General Burhane and General Daglo joined forces to oust civilians from power. Their rivalry finally exploded on Saturday. The international community has since multiplied calls for a ceasefire, but in vain.
