According to the police, a 24-year-old pre-trial detainee set fire to the blanket in his cell at Stadelheim Prison, triggering a fire alarm. Judicial officers took the man out of the smoke-filled cell; he suffered burns to his head and was taken to the infirmary. Officials extinguished the fire with water.
The damage to the duvet, mattress and floor is in the low three-digit range. The prisoner was allowed to have a lighter and was housed in a smoking cell. He is now facing a preliminary investigation into attempted serious arson.
