A major fire in a residential complex in Essen has made 35 of the 39 apartments uninhabitable. Thanks to the emergency services – and the residents who helped each other instead of just saving themselves – that no one died.

At first Nicole W. suspected a fight in the stairwell. “The banging on the door was so massive,” the petite woman recalls, struggling for words with her hands spread, “I just didn’t know what was going on.” W. had closed the shutters and slept soundly, but when the noise didn’t stop, she went to the apartment door anyway. A policeman was standing in the hallway on the third floor, now he was already banging on the neighbors’ door. He just yelled three words at W.: “Get out of here now!”
