Presentation of the 2021 departmental elections
The ballot is a majority vote in two rounds. 4,108 departmental councilors representing 2,054 cantons must be elected. Applications take the form of a pair made up of a man and a woman, guaranteeing parity in the departmental council.
In order to be elected in the first round, a pair must obtain at least an absolute majority of the votes cast, and this number of votes cast must represent at least a quarter of those registered. If these conditions are not met, a second round is organized, where pairs can be maintained having obtained a number of votes greater than 12.5% of those registered. The pair which obtains the greatest number of votes in the second round is then elected.
