In the medieval Beowulf saga, Grendel is a scary monster. Now the material is being reissued – with Jeff Bridges in the leading role. Dave Bautista and Bryan Cranston are also there.

Hollywood star Jeff Bridges (74, “Crazy Heart”) is supposed to transform into a monster in front of the camera. The actor is on board as the leading actor in the planned “Grendel” film adaptation, as the US industry newspapers “Variety” and “Hollywood Reporter” reported. The live-action film, directed by Robert D. Krzykowski, is produced by the Jim Henson Company (“Muppets”).

In the medieval heroic poem Beowulf, the kingdom of Denmark is plagued by the disfigured monster Grendel. King Hrothgar chooses the warrior Beowulf to defeat the monster.

US director Robert Zemeckis filmed “The Legend of Beowulf” in 2007 using special animation technology, with Anthony Hopkins as the king, Ray Winstone as Beowulf and Crispin Glover in the monster role. The focus of the new film is Grendel, based on the US novel of the same name by writer John Gardner. In addition to Jeff Bridges, Dave Bautista (55, “Guardians of the Galaxy”) as Beowulf, Bryan Cranston (68, “Breaking Bad”) as King Hrothgar and Thomasin McKenzie (23, “Jojo Rabbit”) as Queen Wealhtheow also appear. Filming is scheduled to take place in Europe later this year.

Bridges announced in October 2020 that he had lymphatic cancer. After months of treatment, the actor announced a year later that his cancer had regressed. Bridges is most associated with “Dude” from the US comedy “The Big Lebowski” (1998). He won the Oscar for Best Actor in 2010 for his role as an alcoholic country singer in “Crazy Heart.”
