Film Industry: Bond’s most successful feature film of the year

It is far from the records of former film classics. Nevertheless, Daniel Craig in the role of James Bond in the pandemic year 2021 attracted by far the most visitors to German cinemas.

The 007 film “No time to die” (“No time to die”) with Daniel Craig, which only started at the end of September, has become the most successful feature film of the year in Germany within just two months. “The 25th film from the James Bond film series will make it onto the winners’ podium by a large margin and with 5.9 million viewers in the cinema year 2021,” announced the market research company Media Control. The film grossed almost 64 million euros.

Almost eight million viewers on “Skyfall”

Actually, the work of director Cary Joji Fukunaga should already start in April 2020. But the film had to be postponed again and again because of the pandemic and the corona measures, which hit cinemas particularly hard. Even under the current circumstances – the cinema halls are sometimes only allowed to be occupied by a third – the film is proving to be a great success.

It is a long way from the 18.8 million viewers that the love drama “Titanic” once drew into German cinemas. But the previous Bond films, all of which ran without the Corona restrictions, didn’t get much more viewers either. The 24th Bond “Specter” had around 7 million moviegoers in Germany at the end of 2015, “Skyfall” even had around 7.8 million in 2012, and “A Quantum of Solace” in 2008 around 4.7 million.

“Fast & Furious” in second place

For months the cinemas in Germany were not allowed to show any films. In the first half of the year only 800,000 visitors were counted. Some houses did not survive the crisis. With the latest James Bond, the industry had hoped to compensate for at least part of the loss of income.

Most of the moviegoers in Germany are under 50 years of age. The extent to which some films lure younger people into the cinemas is also shown by the second biggest screen success in Germany: the ninth episode of the action film “Fast & Furious”, which is about street races and youth gangs.
