In the film “Sophia, Death and I” Marc Hosemann plays Death personified. A documentary about an unusual beauty competition is to receive a special prize.

Actor Marc Hosemann (53) will be awarded the Ernst Lubitsch Prize this year. Hosemann received the prize “for his portrayal of personified death in the film “Sophia, Death and I”, which is equally comical and melancholic,” said the film journalists’ club. The “Berliner Zeitung” had previously reported. The Hamburg native demonstrated his comedic talent last year in the film “A Celebration for Life”.

“Hardly a viewer who doesn’t know Marc Hosemann because of his versatility,” the statement said. The award is named after the director Ernst Lubitsch (1892-1947) and honors the best comedic performance in a German-language film.

Hosemann has appeared in productions such as “4 Blocks” and “Babylon Berlin”, among others. He can be seen as a branch manager in the comedy series “The Discounters”. He was also a member of the Berlin Volksbühne ensemble for many years. A date for the award ceremony has not yet been set. In 2023, filmmaker and actress Karoline Herfurth (“Just Something Beautiful”) won the prize in Berlin.

This year, the Film Journalists’ Club is awarding a special prize to director Radek Wegrzyn for his documentary “Miss Holocaust Survivor.” It’s about an unusual beauty contest in Haifa, Israel, in which Holocaust survivors take part. Wegrzyn delivers a moving portrait, it was said.
