She is one of the few French actresses to have won an Oscar: Juliette Binoche becomes President of the European Film Academy. Her predecessor has other plans.

Oscar winner Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient”, “Beloved Cook”) will be the new President of the European Film Academy. The French actress will succeed director Agnieszka Holland, as the academy announced. She will formally take over the office on May 1st. Holland decided to step down to devote himself entirely to filmmaking. The Polish director took over the position from German filmmaker Wim Wenders in 2021.

“I am not a person who takes office easily, but I have come to the conclusion that I am first and foremost a filmmaker,” Holland said, according to the statement. She couldn’t have wished for a better successor than Binoche. The 60-year-old is one of the few French actresses to have won an Oscar. She was also crowned best actress by the three largest film festivals in Cannes, Berlin and Venice. The European Film Academy, with around 4,600 members, awards the European Film Prize once a year, which is one of the most prestigious awards in the industry.
