The Gotham Awards kick off the award season in Hollywood, which ends with the Academy Awards at the end of March.

The psychodrama “The Lost Daughter” won four awards at the Gotham Awards, which are given to independent films.

The directorial debut of US actress Maggie Gyllenhaal is a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Italian author Elena Ferrante. On Tuesday night, the film won in the top category “Best Film” for the script and the young directors (both Gyllenhaal) and for the best leading actress Olivia Colman. The prizes were presented in a live show in New York.

Two trophies went to the film “Coda” by US director Sian Heder about a girl who grew up as a child of deaf parents. The British Emilia Jones (19) won as a young actress, the deaf US actor Troy Kotsur (53) was named best supporting actor.

“Squid Game” received an award in the TV division

The Japanese drama “Drive My Car”, with which Ryusuke Hamaguchi filmed a short story by Haruki Murakami, was honored as best international film. The Netflix hit “Squid Game”, a brutal, socially critical South Korean thriller series, won best new series in the TV division.

The Gotham Awards, which have been presented since 1991, are the prelude to the trophy season, which ends with the Academy Awards at the end of March. The awards are determined by a group of filmmakers and critics. Previous winners, who later also won Oscars, include films such as “Moonlight”, “Spotlight”, “Birdman” and, most recently, “Nomadland”.
