He played alongside Romy Schneider, was previously a crooner in France, and became known to us as “The Man from Suez”. Now Guy Marchand has died.

The French actor and singer Guy Marchand, who was best known in Germany for his title role in “The Man from Suez”, is dead. The artist died on Friday at the age of 86, as his children told the French news agency AFP. In the Advent multi-part series “Man from Suez” broadcast by ZDF in 1983, he played the builder of the Suez Canal (shipping route between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea), Ferdinand de Lesseps.

Marchand had his first major role in 1971 alongside Brigitte Bardot and Lino Ventura in “The Rum Street” by Robert Enrico (original title: Boulevard du Rhum). Other films followed, such as “A Beautiful Girl Like Me” by François Truffaut and “Cousin, Cousine” by Jean-Charles Tacchella. He was in “The Interrogation” by Claude Miller See Romy Schneider. He won the 1982 César Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the thriller.

Before the artist, who was born in Paris on May 22, 1937, came to film, he made a name for himself as a musician. The singer and clarinetist released several records and became known in France as a crooner.
