It has been 20 years since the World Figure Skating Championships took place in Dortmund. Now the German association wants to bring the European Championships or World Cups to the country.

The German Ice Skating Union wants to compete for a world or European championship Apply for figure skating. “We are already relatively far,” said DEU President Andreas Wagner to the German Press Agency. Which city and in which year is still open.

On the sidelines of the European Championships, which will be held in Kaunas, Lithuania until Saturday, the former journalist wants to lobby the International Ice Skating Union (ISU). The ISU awards both the European Championships and the World Cup. The DEU’s application for the European title fights for 2027 with Essen as the venue was unsuccessful. The world association awarded the European Championships to Lausanne.

“I believe that Germany still has a great importance in figure skating,” said Wagner. South Korean World President Kim Jae-youl is open to a German candidacy.

“Now we have to show that we are willing and able to organize a large event,” explained the association president. He expects a World Cup or European Championships to provide a “momentum for the future” of figure skating in his own country. Most recently, the 2004 World Cup and the 1995 European Championship were held in Dortmund.
