Gianni Infantino is a supporter of Inter Milan. So it’s no wonder that he was pleased with the outcome of the Derby d’Italia on Sunday.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino made no friends with record champions Juventus with a statement on the match day in Serie A. The head of the world association was a guest in Florence on Monday and spoke of an “ideal day” there, partly because of Juve’s defeat against Inter on Sunday evening.

Infantino said on the sidelines of an event honoring the late ex-Fiorentina and UEFA President Artemio Franchi: “First of all, today we are in Florence. Fiorentina won, Juventus lost, so everything is good. And Inter won, so I’m happy and it’s a perfect day to be in Florence.” A statement that was not meant to be deadly serious, but was met with criticism from the Juve-Tifosi on social networks.

Reason for Infantino’s joy: Fiorentina defeated Empoli 1-0 on Sunday and remained within touching distance of the international places. Record champions Juventus, on the other hand, lost 1-0 at home in the Derby d’Italia and thus finally retired from the race for the Scudetto.

Inter moved up to three points from leaders Napoli with one game left. It is not surprising that Infantino is pleased about this. The Swiss has revealed several times in the past that he has sympathies for the Nerazzurri.

Among other things, Infantino said in 2018: “Inter have a beautiful story that inspires millions of fans. The club is slightly crazy and sometimes makes us suffer. Perhaps being an Inter fan helped me become FIFA President.”
