Fewer visitors in Bavaria’s castles because of Corona – Bavaria

The corona pandemic has also left its mark on the palaces, castles and residences in Bavaria. In 2021, the historical sights counted around 1.2 million visitors, around 200,000 fewer than the year before – and miles away from the more than 5.3 million guests who came in 2018 before the corona pandemic.

Around 178,000 people wanted to see Neuschwanstein Castle, built by King Ludwig II. You could have experienced the castle exclusively, said Home Minister Albert Füracker (CSU) on Tuesday in Munich. As in previous years, Neuschwanstein was also the most visited castle in Germany.

According to a statement, the income of the palace administration fell by around 1.9 million euros to around 36.3 million euros. The expenses for the operative business would have amounted to 72.6 million euros. The cost recovery ratio from the operative business has remained almost constant at around 50 percent.

The Bavarian Palace Administration used the time to advance construction work and spent around 62 million euros on this last year. According to Füracker, for example, the work on the Imperial Castle in Nuremberg and the Yellow Stairs in the Munich Residence have been completed. This year, among other things, the throne room of Neuschwanstein Castle is to be completed. The museums in Aschaffenburg’s Johannisburg Palace would also reopen in the second half of 2022.

This year’s highlights are the Bayreuth Residency Days from May 6th to 8th and the “Typically Franconian” state exhibition of the House of Bavarian History from May 25th in the Ansbach Orangery.
