Fewer demolitions – economy – SZ.de

Not enough apartments are being built in Germany, but at least not as many are being demolished or rededicated as before. Last year, only about 16,500 of the approximately 43.4 million apartments fell out of stock, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office on Thursday. That was the lowest departure since 1992.

The record was set in 2004 when, at around 60,000, more than three times as many apartments disappeared from the market as in 2022. The situation was similar for buildings used wholly or partly for residential purposes: 12,600 departures meant a low and were far from the maximum , which dates back to 1998 with 30,000 buildings. The main reason for demolitions are new construction projects. Almost a third (32 percent) of the demolished buildings had been built before 1948. 53 percent came from the years 1949 to 1986.
