Fewer accidents but more road deaths in 2022

After two years in which the number of people killed on the roads of Loire-Atlantique approached its historic low, mortality started to rise again in 2022 in the department, reveal the latest figures from the prefecture. Some 62 people thus lost their lives, compared to 56 in 2020 and 2021. A comparison to be qualified, however, insofar as health restrictions had led to a reduction in traffic in 2020 and 2021. The year 2019 was considered as “black” in Loire-Atlantique (71 dead).

With a total of 23 deaths, the third quarter of 2022 will have been particularly deadly, especially the month of September (9 deaths). The monthly average is 5.17 killed. If the majority of the victims were traveling by car, eight motorcyclists, seven pedestrians, three moped riders and a cyclist also died, according to the prefecture. A man riding a scooter also had succumbed to head trauma after a collision with a vehicle, at the beginning of January, in Nantes.

Regarding bodily accidents, the results are, this time, positive since a decrease of 4.6% is observed in 2022 compared to 2021. Some 469 accidents resulting in physical damage were recorded. Same downward trend with regard to the volume of injured: 562 victims, a decrease of 3% compared to 2021. It was in May that the number of injured was the highest. The prefecture announced a year ago a strengthening of road checks.
