Confectionery manufacturer Ferrero is recalling other products shortly before Easter due to the risk of salmonella. The list now ranges from surprise eggs to Christmas items – other countries are also affected. Most German supermarkets even want to take back the affected products without a receipt.

Just before Easter, Ferrero’s product recall related to salmonella cases is expanding. The confectionery manufacturer recalled more “children’s” products on Thursday. In addition to Germany and other European countries, Australia and Israel are now also affected.

In addition to Easter items, the recall now also affects some items from the past Christmas season. These include special surprise eggs and advent calendars, each with a best-before date of April 20, 2022, as can be seen from an overview published on Thursday on the Lebensmittelarning.de portal.

Surgery eggs and chocolate bons affected

The recall also affects batches of Kinder Surprise Eggs (pack of three) with a sell-by date between April and June 2022, as well as Kinder-Schoko-Bons and Kinder-Schoko-Bons White with a sell-by date between May and September 2022.

According to the information, the products Kinder-Surprise Maxi (100 grams), Kinder-Mini-Eggs (100 grams) and Kinder-Mix packs containing one of the above-mentioned items with a best-before date between August and September 2022 are also being recalled. All items were made in the same factory, according to Ferrero. You will find all recalled items including batch numbers in this Overview of foodwarning.de.

105 confirmed salmonella cases

According to Ferrero, selected batches of “kids” products made in Belgium are affected by the recall. It is “about a possible connection with a number of reported salmonella cases”. Although none of the “kids” products tested positive for salmonella, Ferrero takes the matter very seriously, “because consumer protection is our top priority.”

In Europe, the EU food safety authority EFSA and the EU health authority ECDC started investigations. The two authorities had spoken of 105 confirmed salmonella cases and 29 suspected cases on Wednesday, most of them in children under the age of ten. Certain chocolate products have been identified as a likely route of infection.

The outbreak is marked by an unusually high proportion of children requiring hospitalization, some with severe symptoms such as bloody diarrhea, EFSA and ECDC also said. Certain chocolate products have been identified as a likely route of infection.
