When politicians call for tougher penalties for certain behavior, one can assume two things. First, you have recognized that there is a problem and that there is a public expectation to act. This applies to the threat posed to women in partnerships. Because one of the most disgraceful motives for killing women, but one that is actually also the most common in Germany, is the patriarchal possessiveness of men who pretend to be offended by women who leave them. (By the way: You don’t need a migration background for this motive, as every criminal judge is happy to tell you.) Secondly: The said politicians don’t want to pay anything for it. The great gesture is more important to you than the effect.
