A total of 1,533 scientists completed their habilitation last year. While the number for men fell slightly compared to 2019, it rose by eleven percent for women to 538.
In the past year, the number of completed habilitations rose slightly. Around 1,500 scientists achieved the highest academic degree with a teaching qualification, as the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden explained. That was an increase of one percent compared to the previous year.
While the number of habilitations among men fell by four percent to 995 compared to the previous year, it rose by eleven percent to 538 among women. For 2020, the proportion of women doing habilitation was 35 percent, three percentage points more than in the previous year. In 2010 the proportion of women was still 25 percent.
Most habilitation in human medicine
With a total of 847, as in previous years, most – namely 55 percent – of all post-doctoral qualifications in the subject group human medicine / health sciences were completed. The number of habilitations in this subject group increased by six percent compared to the previous year. The proportion of women in this department was 32 percent.
13 percent of the habilitations were completed in the fields of mathematics and natural sciences. Here the proportion of women was 30 percent. Twelve percent of the post-doctoral qualifications were completed in the humanities – here the proportion of women was highest at 47 percent.
Habilitation on average 41 years old
The average age of those with a habilitation was 41 years in 2020. With an average of almost 42 years, women were slightly older than men. The proportion of foreign habilitation graduates increased by four percentage points compared to 2010 to a total of eleven percent in 2020.
